My good friends in the no nonsense metal band, My Own Nation, invited my brother and I to a night of brutality and heavy metal. The brutality came from the slam pit and the metal was served hot and fresh by three amazing bands.
My Own Nation kicked off the evening with their brand of metal that’s easy to get into. Right from the first heavy riff down to the last crescendo they poured their heart into the art they love. Two chaps came up to Jeff Turner, singer, and told him how much they enjoyed his style and the way he can hold his deep voiced scream. Then there’s Jerry Turner bringing the thrash rhythm guitar, as Rick Martin thumps some funk on the bass. Sean McGrath shreds on rhythm guitar with influences of Joe Satriani and Malmsteen. Drummer Brian Kulesza slams the skins with punk rock angst. The band has only been together for a short year, yet they play like they’ve been together far longer than that.
Next up was PM5K’s tour supporter Knee High Fox fronted by Chrissy Fox Connolly, who dominated the crowd with her crushing (yet sweet) voice. Backed by Simon Nagel on bass, Neal Tiemann on guitar, and Oscar Silva battling the toms, they’re some heavy duty dudes and she is one heavy duty chick! Their music is alternative with a Goth twist and metal back beat, and some punk tossed in for good measure. Powerman’s singer joined them on a rap-core song they did together on a side project; good sound and great attitude, Knee High Fox rox!
The house was a bit more than half full, and the crowd was more than happy to bounce on cue with the pounding beat. Their set was fierce, the stage show, a spectacle, and adding color were laser lights set in the headstock of each guitar pointing the light over and into the crowd. This only intensified the drive of Powerman 5000’s ensemble as the five piece band (crowded as they were on the stage), thrashed about as best they could.
A highlight for me was when Spider One yelled, “David Bowie!” and let the crowd cheer. He said it a few more times till the cheers got louder and the band went into the first verse and chorus of “Space Oddity,” and we all sang in tribute to the lightning bolt clad Spider from Mars.
Powerman 5000 gave 5000% of themselves and put on a powerful, heavy show. My own Nation and Knee High Fox also gave heart and soul in their performances as well.
Special thanks to Jeff, Jerry, Sean, Rick and Brian for the in, and welcoming me into the My Own Nation fold.
