Inside
by Miguel Angel Vivas

I don’t know what it is about foreign horror films that make people think they need to be remade. Is it because people are too lazy to read subtitles? Is it because people are annoying and just feel the need to take a good thing and make it bad? Probably both. Inside sat for two years before being released and, in my humble opinion, should have continued to sit without anybody laying eyes on it. I’m writing this review because I’d like people to know that they should seriously suck it up and see the original, whether they like subtitles or not, and never watch this trash fire of a remake. And if you have seen the 2007 new French extremity original, just stick to it, don’t bother with your curiosities.

Riddled with annoying tropes, the Inside remake tried and failed miserably to hold my attention or make me care about anything going on in the film at all. It was not even a reimagining of a great film, it was almost an exact copy, and what little originality was introduced in this remake was unnecessary and felt silly more than anything else. Even with people who I know can act in other movies or shows I’ve seen them in didn’t help this film. The characters seemed bored to death with their own plight and actions; their dialogue forced and awkward. At least the cinematography was nice.

I’m not saying that the original, À l'intérieur, was without its flaws, but a remake should have been a great opportunity to improve upon those flaws. Instead, they took those stupid little mistakes and kept them in this version for whatever reason and even made some of them worse.

Even if we pretend that the brutal original never existed, Inside would still fall flat and be merely mediocre. The unique spin on a home invasion story in which a crazed woman stalks an expecting mother should have been left alone. This is probably the shortest review I’ve ever written for HMS, but there’s just nothing more I have to say about something so bland.
