This Swedish band comes as a new experience to me. The website proclaims melodic death metal, I however beg to differ I hear more of a Trivium thing going on here particularly with the vocal styles and melodic guitar work. I’m not a big fan of this kind of “thing” but being a musician I appreciate what goes into the whole album process. I’m sure that the people out there who like this style of music will really get a buzz out of this, but I stress now this is not melodic death metal, it is melodic metal which is very well written and performed (ala Trivium) and as such is suited to individual taste.
What struck me at first was the electronic presence of keyboards with dance type feels to it on the first 3 songs (this does come back throughout this album). The melodies at times are quite irresistible and if that grabs your attention then this band are surely worth a listen. If Trivium is a bit too heavy for you then The Unguided will probably appeal because they are lighter musically. The songs are well written and performed and the band are clearly talented so despite not being my cup of tea I have to be honest and say completely unbiased, this is good commercial metal music, well written and performed and the appeal is quite obvious.
This is from a person who likes heavier, darker, more brutal music as a first choice. It won’t appeal to everyone, but then neither do Cannibal Corpse or Crowbar. If I can open my mind, then so can you.
