ALBUMS UNDER REVIEW

VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Reminiscent of the days of 80’s metal Surrender to No One is the new release from Chastain and I’m sure a welcome return to all Leather Leone fans. Chastain’s wicked guitar solos definitely steal the show; however, the drummer is a talented piece to the puzzle and the songs blend well from track to track.

This album is definitely catered to a specific audience. If you enjoy the vocal style that Leone brings to the table, then you will enjoy this album in its entirety. For me, this is a style that is very alienating to a broader spectrum of people, leaving you with either loving or hating it. Rather than stepping into the shoes of a modern day power metal, the sound is far too nostalgic. It seems that Chastain hasn’t made much of a change; for long time fans it’s a beloved release, while those looking for something new should simply keep looking.

The guitar licks on Surrender to No One do not disappoint. David Chastain isolates key notes and aggressively delivers as usual, making proud the fans of the old Shrapnel Records days. However, I feel as if the songwriting doesn’t deviate from the original formula, meaning that the songs haven’t gotten worse, but surely have not progressed. There are fantastic melodies, but the atmosphere just truly wasn’t impressive enough to leave its mark on me.

Being that I am not a long time listener and thus not making me a fan or an expert, I give Chastain’s Surrender To No One a clearly opinionated 5 out of 10; not amazing, not terrible.
