Episode Twenty-Eight: This week we piggyback off Episode 26 when we discussed Metallica's Black Album. In 1992. Megadeth followed through the same door Metallica took to commercial success with Countdown to Extinction. This release was highly successful and landed at number two on the Billboard 200 charts. The album also charted well in countries like the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand and Norway. It went certified three times platinum in Canada and went certified gold in Japan. The album spawned four successful singles in "Symphony of Destruction", "Foreclosure of A Dream", "Sweating Bullets" and "Skin O' My Teeth".
The album has become Megadeth's highest charting album, in addition to becoming a commercial success overall. Critics gave it mostly positive reviews and they received a Grammy nomination in 1993. The tour started in Europe during the summer of 1992 and acts like Pantera, Suicidal Tendencies and White Zombie were brought along as opening acts. The tour finished up in the United States in December of 93.
Fun Facts: The album cover art was done Canadian graphic artist Hugh Syme, who did many covers for Rush and a whole of slew of other bands. Hugh also worked on the next cover for the follow-up with Youthanasia. The song "Psychotron" was based on the Marvel Comics character Deathlok. The title track "Countdown to Extinction" was suggested by drummer Nick Menza who had read a Time Life article bearing the same name.
