Show Notes:
Episode Ninety-Five: Jim and Ken are once again joined by Phil to discuss a death metal classic with Obituary's 1990 masterpiece Cause of Death. The album was released September 19th through Roadrunner records and is a landmark recording. Coming off the heals of the successful Slowly We Rot album from 1989, Cause of Death featured the guitar work of James Murphy.
Cause of Death was said to be compared to early Celtic Frost and Hellhammer. However, the album does feature a cover of Frost's Circle of the Tyrants; which has become a popular number of their live sets. The overall sound is characterized by vocalist John Tardy's gore infested gurgles and couple that with James Murphy riffs.James would only play on this one album, as Allen West returned on the next release.
Fun Facts: The album artwork was created by Michael Whelan based on a H.P. Lovecraft's Nightmare A. There was also some controversy surrounding the artwork due to this cover being originally slated for Sepultura's Beneath The Remains; however, the artwork was switched to Obituary angering Igor Cavalera.
