Show Notes:
Episode Eighteen: Machine Head's Burn My Eyes (1994). Hailing from Oakland, California, this Is the debut release from the American thrashers, who are credited for starting the next wave of groove and Nu-Metal thrash during the 1990's. Guitarist Rob Flynn started the project while still a member of Violence, but left in 91 and made Machine Head his main focus. Many compare the style to Pantera and have noted how the band bridged the gap between Bay Area Thrash and the raw, aggressive, groove ladden hooks of the modern sound.
Burn My Eyes was released June 1st 1994 on Road Runner records and shipped over 400,000 copies worldwide; quickly becoming the label's best selling debut until it was eclipsed years later after Slipknot's debut release in 1999. After the release, Machine Head toured extensively right from the start, forcing drummer Chris Kontos to leave the band. He was quickly replaced by Dave McClain (formerly of Sacred Reich) who joined and stayed for many years.
Fun Facts: The album cover art was done by the great Dave McKean (DC's Sandman and Black Orchid). The song Davidian was inspired by the Waco Seige in 1993 and Real Eyes, Realize, Real Lies was inspired by the 1992 Los Angeles Riots.
