Show Notes:
Episode Fifty-Eight: With episode 58, we go back to South America and discover the classic Sepultura album Arise. This is arguably a ground breaking release and being album number four, the band experiment with the death/thrash sound. They added elements of hardcore punk, industrial metal and Latin percussion. The music was received well from critics and was widely met with critical acclaim. The album went on to become a landmark thrash release and is considered the band's best album.
Arise strives to push the music into a more experimental direction. Some of the aggression and speed are toned down, utilizing groove-laden rhythm on many of the songs. Arise also started opening up to other musical influences from bands like Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, The Young Gods, and Einsturzende Neubauten; along with samples and sound effects. The album charted well and Sepultura went on a whirlwind of a tour to promote the album.
Fun Facts: The album cover art was created by the great Michael Whelan who gave us a smorgasbord of phantasmagorical images. Michael also went on to do the artwork for both Chaos A.D. and Roots.
