The Dirty Nil’s new EP entitled “Smite” is out and this three piece thrash punk band definitely knows how to rock. The beats and hooks are infectious and the singer wails away with the barstool style of a good time band at your local pub.
I hear pieces of Kurt Cobain-ish influence in his vocal style with the way he cracks and carries on. The guitars are grungy in their own way and build a solid chop and crunch as the songs go on. he band in itself is very reminiscent of 90’s alternative bands and honestly Silverchair comes to mind. By today’s standards you’d have to lump these guys into the punk genre considering that Rock N Roll and Alternative Rock contains anything from Mumford and Sons to Foo Fighters. So this is definitely a band that stands out amidst the alternative punk bands of today because they’re flat out wailing on some Rock N Roll and are damn good at it. They’re not trying to sound like anyone else and that’s saying a lot, especially with what I mentioned about today’s standard of original bands.
The vocalist doesn’t seem too worried about cleaning up his style, which is a good thing as it is full of raw, gritty emotion. The instruments are loud and in your face with an in sync drummer and bassist who set the tone for a wild musical ride.
The “Smite” EP is good for someone looking to get into a band that doesn’t allow a specific genre to define itself; they let the music do that for them. These guys have brought a great EP to the table and I enjoyed myself while listening. I think The Dirty Nil should strongly consider sending their EP to college radio stations and bars and pubs in college towns. They would gain a huge following among today’s late teens and twenty-somethings.
