Show Notes:
Episode Forty-Two: We head back to Germany to review the debut release from Exumer. The band hailing from Frankfurt, released Possessed By Fire on by Disaster Records November 8, 1986. The release featured the unique vocal stylings of Mem Von Stein and coupled with spectacular guitars from Ray Mensh and Bernie Siedler.
Possessed By Fire featured music that was heavily inspired by Bay area Thrash metal and exhibited the American sound not found in bands like Kreator, Sodom and Destruction. Many fans compare this album to label mates Angel Dust who also released an energetic album called Into The Dark Past. Possessed was raw sounding, energetic and featured fast songs of thrash metal. The riffs are catchy and the solos were adrenaline fuelled; also the vocals were edgy and maniacal at times. The overall complete package is striking and fresh for the time of recording.
Fun Facts: The album artwork featured a mascot known as the masked figure. Some have pointed out close comparisons to Lord Humungus the leader of a gang of marauders from Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. This character was created by Martin Appoldt and has appeared on several album covers over the years.
