Show Notes:
Episode Forty-Four: This week we head over to Switzerland to discuss 1988's sophomore release from Coroner. Signed to Noise Records, Punishment for Decadence was released August 1st 1988. The album is a technical masterpiece of tight thrash compositions and is a step up from their first release R.I.P. released the previous year.
The band is comprised of Tommy Baron on guitars, Marquis Marky on drums and Ron Royce contributing bass and vocals. The band do have close ties to another Swiss legendary act Celtic Frost, as both Tommy and Marky served as roadies on the Tragic Serenades tour. Coroner continued to push their style of technical thrash on future records like No More Color and Mental Vortex, gaining critical acclaim well into the 90's.
All the lyrics on Punishment were written by Marky and all the music was co-written by Tommy and Royce. The album contained the instrumental track Arc-Light and the short instrumental dubbed "Intro" at the start of the album. The band also included a cover of Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze to close out the album to help push the international sales.
Fun Facts: The album cover featured a photo of a sculpture from the renowned classical sculptor Auguste Rodin. The cover was conceived and designed by Marky.
