Show Notes:
Episode Forty-Six: This week we discuss the hardcore brilliance of Whiplash hailing from New Jersey. As part of the bristling NY thrash scene, the band joins the ranks of Anthrax, Overkill and Nuclear Assault. Their first album Power and Pain was released in the month of February, 1986 on Roadrunner Records.
The band was formed by guitarist Tony Portaro and he was joined by Tony Bono on bass and Tony Scaglione on drums. What are the odds of forming a band whereby all the members shared the same first name. As funny as that may sound, there was nothing funny about the band's bristling style of speed metal mixed with thrash and punk. The album clocked in close to thirty five minutes of raw intensity and relentless machine gun riffing. This album had a real cult following in the early days of thrash metal.
Fun Facts: The cover artwork was created by Shawn Taggert who also did covers for NY punk bands like Crumbsuckers and Agnostic Front. Some feel this cover is just plain awful, as it was named by Metal Hammer magazine on a list of the 50 most hilariously ugly rock and metal album covers of all time.
