Show Notes:
Episode Sixty-Nine: This week the boys discuss the brilliance of Dark Angel's sophomore release Darkness Descends. Released November 17th, 1986 on Combat Records, the album was praised for it's relentless approach in songwriting and sound. This was the first album to feature longtime drummer Gene Hoglan and the last album to feature vocalist Don Doty.
Darkness Descends is considered by many to be a proto-death metal album and did receive positive reviews by critics. Most cite this album as a major influence on the death metal genre, and also on other metal genres like doom and groove. The album was produced by Randy Burns who had just finished work on Megadeth's Peace Sells album. The other known fact about the album is Gene Hoglan's statement about recording all his drum parts in just one day, with the only exception being the track "Black Prophecies" which recorded a day earlier. Gene said he nailed it in one take.
Fun Facts: The song Darkness Descends had lyrical content contributed by Gene Hoglan which was a homage to Judge Dredd comics. The lyrical themes centre around the Dark Judges and how they intend to bring chaos to Mega City 1.
